Immigration Minister Peter Dutton today announced that all children have been released from immigration detention centres. The change is largely due to an administrative reclassification of immigration detention centres to ‘immigration playgrounds’.
“It’s been almost a decade since there were no children in detention,” Dutton said. “On Friday night, when I got the call, it was something I was proud of.”
Comment was sought from Labor leader Bill Shorten, but he could not be found. Opposition leader Richard Di Natale criticized the move, calling it “an administrative slight of hand”.
